What is BLAKE2b?

BLAKE2b is a cryptographic hash function that is faster than MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2, and SHA-3, yet is at least as secure as the latest standard SHA-3. It produces variable-length hash outputs from 8 to 512 bits (1 to 64 bytes). BLAKE2b is optimized for 64-bit platforms and is part of the BLAKE2 family developed by Jean-Philippe Aumasson, Samuel Neves, Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, and Christian Winnerlein.

  • Variable output length: Can produce hashes from 8 to 512 bits
  • High performance: Faster than SHA-2 and SHA-3 while maintaining security
  • Deterministic: The same input always produces the same hash
  • Avalanche effect: Small changes in input produce drastically different outputs
